Facilities Financing Opportunities (Credit Enhancement)

Looking for facilities assistance? If you work with a charter school and are looking for facilities assistance, you may be interested in contacting the current grantees under the Credit Enhancement for Charter School Facilities Program to determine if they are able to work with your charter school to secure financing. These grantees do not provide grants, but they work with the charter school to secure financing (loans/bonds) for facilities. Please note that each of these grantees have a focus area, so you should contact those grantees that are interested in working in the State of your charter school or have a national focus. Also, it may be helpful to visit the websites of these entities to get a better sense of the work they do.

We encourage charter schools seeking services to contact multiple organizations to determine which one can offer the best rates and terms for their situation.

Description:

The nonprofit Center for Community Self-Help is the umbrella organization that encompasses all parts of Self-Help, including Self-Help Credit Union, Self-Help Federal Credit Union, Self-Help Ventures Fund, and the Center for Responsible Lending. Together, we provide financing, technical support, consumer financial services and advocacy for those left out of the economic mainstream. Since Self-Help's founding in 1980, we have helped expand economic opportunity for underserved communities across North Carolina, Washington D.C., California, Illinois and many other states. Center for Community Self-Help ("Self-Help") is targeting its Charter School Loan Fund to start-up Charter Schools and Charter Schools located in under-served, disadvantaged communities. The benefits of our financing can be briefly summarized as: (i) lower fees at closing; (ii) lower interest rates; (iii) more flexible loan terms; (iv) longer amortization periods; and (v) enhanced technical assistance. This supports long-term financial and operating sustainability for schools in low-wealth communities that typically have few resources and tight operating margins.

Description:

CSDC, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and CDFI, supports quality public school choice for underserved students by developing and financing affordable charter school facilities nationally. CSDC has a special focus on new/early-stage schools, rural schools, schools serving predominately low income students, and schools in communities with poor performing traditional schools. CSDC has received seven federal credit enhancement grants totaling $58.6M and uses these funds in multiple ways to 1) provide lease or loan guarantees, 2) leverage loan pools for tenant improvement, acquisition, construction and renovation mini-perm loans nationally and 3) to support its turnkey facility development program (lease with option-to-purchase). Often times, the same school will be served by multiple grants as it progresses through its facility lifecycle.
