The purpose of the Fulbright-Hays GPA Program is to promote, improve, and develop the study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the United States. The program provides opportunities for faculty, teachers, and undergraduate and graduate students to conduct individual and group projects overseas. There are three types of GPA short-term projects: (1) Short-term seminar projects of 4-6 weeks designed to help participants integrate international studies into an institution's or school system's general curriculum by focusing on a particular aspect of area study, such as the culture of an area or country of study, (2) curriculum development projects of 4-8 weeks that provide participants the opportunity to acquire resource materials for curriculum development in modern foreign language and area studies for use and dissemination in the United States, and (3) group research or study projects of 3-12 months designed to give participants time to undertake research or study in a foreign country opportunity.
