National Charter School Management Overview, 2016-17

This brief by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools provides updated statistics on the management structure for every charter school in the country while also providing additional analyses along with a number of key dimensions. According to the Alliance, in 2016-17, 65 percent of charter schools were independently managed, 23 percent were part of a Charter Management Organization (CMO), and 12 percent were part of an Education Management Organization (EMO). Across the country, 180 CMOs and 54 EMOs served 43 percent of all charter school students in 2016-17. However, the prevalence of different management structures continues to vary significantly at both the state and local levels.
