Science and Language for English Language Learners in Relation to Next Generation Science Standards and with Implications for Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics
In 2011, the National Research Council released “A Framework for K-12 Science Education” that is guiding the development of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), which are expected to be finalized in 2013. This article discusses learning challenges and opportunities that will emerge as ELLs engage with NGSS. First, the authors provide an overview of the framework particularly focusing on language-intensive science and engineering practices. Second, it reviews the literature on language in science learning and teaching and provides a perspective on second language acquisition and pedagogy. Lastly, it examines the intersections between learning of science and learning of language and discusses the implications for research and policy.
