On May 12, 2025, the U.S. Department of Education proudly kicked off National Charter Schools Week celebrating 30 years of the Charter Schools Program (CSP) — a program that has helped communities across the country launch, replicate, and expand over 8,300 public charter schools in 43 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
Since the first CSP grant was awarded in 1995, the program has supported nearly half of the charter schools operating today—fueling innovation, empowering parents, and expanding choice in public education. All week, the National Charter School Resource Center highlighted the Charter Schools Program’s key grant initiatives and the inspiring grantees behind them—leaders who are opening schools, replicating successful models, and driving innovation in public education.
